Day 1: Arrival in Solvang
Flew into LAX and drove up the 101 — Solvang makes a good first night. Danish-kitsch aside, it's well positioned for Los Olivos and the drive north. Carhartt was a solid first pour: small production, unpretentious, genuinely good Syrah.
Day 2: Solvang, SLO & Into Paso
Morning coffee at Good Seed, then north through San Luis Obispo for a stop at Chamisal before hitting Paso proper. Turtle Rock and Nicora were the day's revelation — both five-star, both on a quiet stretch of Oakdale Road that most visitors never find.
Turtle Rock poured a Grenache that stopped the conversation. Nobody said anything for a full minute.
Day 3: West Side Wineries
The west side is where Paso gets serious. Kukkula sits on a ridge overlooking the Adelaida hills and makes wines that could hold their own anywhere in California. Herman Story was worth the stop too — bold, theatrical, but genuinely well made. Pony Club downtown for a nightcap.
Day 4: The Best Day
Desparada first thing — a tiny operation making precise, European-style Rhône wines in a region known for bigger, riper styles. Then Jada, then Niner. In Bloom for dinner was the meal of the trip: smart cooking, great local wine list, and none of the attitude you'd get for the same quality in Napa.
Day 5: Final Pours
Opolo and Calcareous rounded out the five-star list. Les Petites Canailles for dinner — French bistro done right, right in downtown Paso. A strong finish to the wine portion of the trip.
Day 6: Heading Home
Quick stop at High Street Market in San Luis Obispo on the way to the airport. Good breakfast, good send-off.

Hard-learned lessons
What we learned
01
Book the West Side first
The best small producers — Kukkula, Desparada, Turtle Rock — are appointment-only and book weeks out. Lock those in before anything else.
02
Four wineries is a full day
It sounds light, but between driving rural roads, sitting through pours, and talking to the winemakers — four is right. Five is too many.
03
In Bloom for dinner
Best restaurant in town. Make the reservation before you book anything else. The wine list leans local and the kitchen is serious without being precious.
04
Ship your bottles home
Most wineries ship. If you're buying seriously, plan to ship rather than pack. Cheaper than checked bags and nothing breaks.
